Shad&Baz and its rendezvous with roller derby

Sorry we've been a little slack here! But some exciting news, one of our very own Shad&Baz bows was featured in a roller derby promo video that came out just a couple of days ago!

                                             Check out the video here!

A little backstory to the video taken from the roller derby leagues page...

"Within these promotions, Pirate City Rollers (PCR) were trying to challenge the idea that derby is spectacle, fishnets, etc, the theme being defy expectation. So they decided that rather than use those stereotypes to garner interest, PCR intentionally used those 'props' to highlight that although that's what people have come to expect of roller derby, in the derby shots, you see no fishnets, no hot pants, no spectacle. You instead see helmets, safety gear, refs, team uniforms, a team of skaters....a sport to be respected....the girls defy expectation and break away from the traditional ideas commonly associated with our sport. And although they defy expectation and show you that it's about the game (and the sport), it also suggests you can be whatever rings true to you and still be a success in roller derby. No 'one' ideal defines what your players can be. #defyexpectation"

Flying south to Dunedin

Last week Shad & Baz headed to Dunedin, New Zealand. For those of you unfamiliar with the city, it's a medium sized city (as far NZ cities go) with scottish roots and architecture to boast. Beuatiful little streets and cafes, and very well known for its general dining. If you find yourself in these parts, Japanese, Thai and Cambodian restaurants are incredible. I know, you would think there would be more of a scottish influence dining wise, considering the original settlers here, but Dunedin makes up for it in the form of whisky bars.

The city is filled with beautiful churches, below are pictures of Knox Church. Although I don't have photos here, the First Church in the middle of town is also a must see if you are visiting.

And even though the city is headed into a chilly winter, something else Dunedin is well known for, (first snow of the season today!) there are still hints of summer colours around the city...

The University of Otago can make you feel like you have transported back in time, or better yet, that you have disappeared into the world of Hogwarts...

A must visit eatery is Friendlys Khmer Satay Noodle House which serves up their NZ famous chicken satay noodle soup (left). I have yet to find this soup anywhere else in the country. Or if you are in the modd for Japanese, try Jizo and order their karage chicken, it's to die for.

All in all, Dunedin is the perfect city to wander, there's always something interesting to be seen or experienced...

And these pictures are from only a few days, imagine what more Dunedin has to offer!

Wear summer in your hair

Overcast weather can feel so depressing, dull and void of colour. At times like these, you have to create you own 'weather', and put a little colour into your day. Still mourning the loss of summer, on these days, I like to wear summer in my hair and genreally indulge in things that remind me of warmer days. So I accessorised my hair with a touch of summer, put on my scarf and jacket and headed out.

My 're-living' of summer indulgence was lunching at De Fontein in Mission Bay Auckland, a Belgian beer cafe. They boast delicious food and an impressive list of drinks. I personally love their NZ native steamed green lipped mussels, cooked in a coconut cream and lemongrass curry. They source their mussels from the beautiful clear waters of the Coromandel Peninsula. But a visit to this cafe isn't complete with a glass of Leffe (my usual choice), or one of their many other specialities beers. It's second floor location also makes it the perfect place to people watch. Definitely recommend this cafe if you're ever in the neighbourhood!

If you want your own little touch of summer, the featured floral hair clip above can be found on our Etsy store, ordered through our Facebook page or instore at Life Pharmacy Birkenhead.

Reminiscing summer days

Today the reality kicked in. It's beginning to get a little chilly here in NZ as the last of the summer warmth fades away and leaves us with a winter chill. Missing the heat already, we put together some of summer photos we took at the Parnell botanical gardens earlier this year to help us momentarily disappear back into a dream of summer. Envious of those of you heading into warmer temperatures on the other side of the globe.

And a cheeky grin from this wee fellow, couldn't resist!

If you see any hair accessories you like here, remember you can purchase them on EtsyFacebook or at Life Pharmacy Birkenhead, Auckland.

Sunday inspiration: 8 ways to glam up your ponytail

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
People underestimate the effect a bad hair day can have on you. We've all had that bad hair day where you just don't know what to do with your hair and you just want to retreat to the confines of your home and not face anyone that day. As a quick fix, I often pull my mane into a messy bun or a ponytail in an attempt to tame the beast. But sometimes that's just not enough of a fix. On these days, I like to glam up my ponytail with various accessories. It just gives it that finishing touch to make myself feel a little more made up and prepared to take on the world. I have gotten into such a habit of it, that I now feel a little naked if I don't accessorise my ponytail before I leave the house. So I thought I would compile some of my favourite ways that I have seen ponytails accessorised online. A little Sunday inspiration for those of you who share in my 'bad hair day' dramas.
